The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Closed for the season

Sketched on a napkin and carved into history by Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye, this course hosted the Senior PGA Championship in 2015. Senior PGA champion Colin Montgomerie called it "one of the iconic courses" in America and one that golfers all over the world will want to play. This championship golf course on one of Indiana's most dramatic elevation points has narrow, immaculate fairways and rugged, intense terrain. The Pete Dye Course has gained national acclaim for its 40-mile panoramic views of the southern Indiana countryside, three man-made lakes, "volcano" bunkers and a variety of elevation changes. A robust 8,100 yards from the professional tees punctuate Dye's signature sting from vista to vista.

The Making of the Pete Dye Course

Golf was an important part of the history of both French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs Hotels. When the two historic hotels joined to form French Lick Resort, it was obvious golf would continue to play an integral role in the success of the property.

The Cook Group, owners of the resort since 2005, set out to establish a historical and a world-class golf destination. To do this, an expansion of the existing golf operation was a must. After considering several well-known golf course architects, they decided Indiana's own legend, Pete Dye, was the designer for the job. Considered by many as the world's top modern-day architect, Dye walked the proposed Mt. Airie site and concluded there was no way to build a golf course on that land. The slopes were too severe and the terrain too rugged. Thankfully, he changed his mind — and the rest is sketched on a napkin and carved into history.

Discover all the challenges and opportunities Dye experienced while he built his course on one of Indiana's most dramatic elevation points, and hear him explain why this course is special and memorable for those who play it.

The Donald Ross Course at French Lick Daily • 7:30am – 5:30pm | Closing December 1

The Donald Ross Course allows golfers to step back in time and experience the game the way it was meant to be played. Built in 1917, this award-winning course designed by renowned architect Donald Ross maintains nearly all the classic elements of its original design. Among the trademark Ross features are 80 deep-faced bunkers that can challenge even the expert. The severely undulating greens were, and still are, some of the most radically shaped and contoured in golf. A 2006 restoration ensured the integrity of this classic layout remained intact. This par-70 course has been rated the No. 2 public course in Indiana by Golfweek every year since 2011.

The Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort Celebrates more than 100 Years!

It was 1917 when golfers played with hickory sticks, Bobby Jones was a young amateur in the sport, and renowned designer Donald Ross had created a stunning new course in Indiana.

"The Hill Course," as it was originally known, was designed by Donald James Ross in 1917. Just seven years later in 1924, the course hosted the PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen. He beat Englishman James Barnes on the 36th and final hole of the two-round tournament and walked away with the grand prize of $6,830. The course has hosted LPGA championships and Senior PGA events in the years since.

Ross, an expert greenskeeper and club maker, is credited with laying the groundwork for the American golf industry. His architectural firm, Donald J. Ross and Associates, designed and redesigned 400 courses throughout North America between the early 1900s and the late 1940s. Ross is one of the few golf course architects to be admitted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. As a testament to his architectural brilliance, Donald Ross course designs account for 11 of Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses in the United States. After a $5 million dollar restoration effort in 2005, the Hill Course was renamed The Donald Ross Course at French Lick.

History

The Valley Links course was commissioned in 1907 by Thomas Taggart as one of his many improvements to French Lick Springs Hotel. Taggart hired storied course designer Tom Bendelow to design the first championship golf course at the hotel in 1907. At the time, it was known as The Valley Course and had eighteen holes. Later, after French Lick Springs Hotel was purchased by the COOK Group, Incorporated, The Valley Course was redesigned, through a partnership with US Kids Golf, into the family-friendly nine-hole course that exists today.
